Interior design

The Scandinavian functionalist style, with authentic materials in pure shapes and colors, dates back to architect Gunnar Asplund and the 30’s political concept of “Folkhemmet”, setting a “quality of life” standard for the people. It was further developed by 50’s furniture designer and architect Bruno Mathsson as he mixed Japanese techniques with American modernism. In the 80’s, Jonas Bohlin and Thomas Sandell emerged as new stars, dedicated to clean-lined aesthetics – an influence which rubbed off on the 90’s boom of restaurants, bars and cafés. And just like the 60’s anti-functionalist movement, there has been a contra reaction. Represented, for instance, by richly decorated restaurants like Beirut Café, Grill and Le Rouge.

However, the typical Swedish home is synonymous with Ikea. Not only did the Swedish chain store bring Scandinavian style to an international arena – the budget design concept also heightened the design-awareness among Swedes in general, which is one of the main reasons why so many good design stores are found in Stockholm.
