Nordic Light Hotel has published a book about light entitled “Light Moods”. The central theme of the book is the fact that any colour can be perceived as beautiful or ugly. Light is described as a sensation, where the way it is perceived depends on the mood of the spectator and the situation in which it is experienced. “Light Moods” also describes how light architect Kai Piippo perceives the qualities of Nordic light and how it provided the inspiration for the light design of the Nordic Light Hotel – Stockholm’s design hotel.
The light book also addresses the way different colours affect our senses. “Sweden is extremely light in the summer and very dark in the winter, and I think this makes Swedes particularly sensitive to light,” says Kai Piippo. ”Light Moods” is written by Magnus Larsson, who is training to be an architect. Magnus, who cites his most dramatic experience with colour as the afternoon sunshine in Torre Agbar, claims that he would probably start with black, if he were to create a new colour himself.
The book will be on sale at the Nordic Light Hotel’s reception desk, and will be placed in every room as a guide to promote the wellbeing of every guest. No less than 60 of the hotel’s 175 rooms also feature light beds, created jointly by one of the hotel’s own designers, Lars Pihl, and light architect Kai Piippo. Offering guests the freedom to determine their own lighting in the room represents a natural extension of the hotel’s light design theme. Lars Pihl’s vision embraces the idea that the guest should be able to design his or her own hotel room light experience with the simplest means. The light bed requires no more than the simple click of a button to change the room’s atmosphere. The guest can choose from any colour of the rainbow to create a wide range of moods – such as a restful blue or energizing red. The guest can also select from two fluctuating light programmes that vary the intensity of the light generated. This lighting flexibility is possible thanks to diode technology (LEDs), controlled by a small computer integrated into the snow-white headboard.
